Values of Free Expression

         Individual Self Fulfilment

There are Eight Values of Free Expression: Marketplace of Ideas, participation in self-government, stable change, individual self-fulfillment, check on government power, promote tolerance, promote innovation, and protect dissent. Out of those eight values, I felt that individual self-fulfilment would be the most important one to write about.

By definition, Individual Self-fulfillment is "free speech that enables individuals to express themselves and thereby create their own identity -- and, in the process perhaps, find kindred spirits." I find Individual Self-fulfillment to be the most important because of how it allows everyone to express themselves in the way they not only want to, but need to.

The most common way people use individual self-fulfillment to express themselves is through different social media outlets like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc. They can post quick life updates, pictures, or whatever else they desire with just the click of a button thanks to how up to date technology is these days. Most people use these sights very often to update friends and/or follows and to keep up with what their friends or famous people are up to. These social media platforms are what many people's lives revolve around and if they were not allowed the right to continue to express themselves as they wished, it would most likely not end well.

Free Expression is very important for people who need to get an important message across and express their feelings on different issues. Click here to read a more in-depth article written by Lee Rowlan on the importance of free speech for society.
